Jeju Haenyeo in Korea
Haenyeo documents the lives of the traditional female divers of Jeju Island, whose labor is synchronized with the rhythms of the sea.
Without mechanical equipment such as an air tank, the divers rely on breath, experience, and intimate knowledge of tides and underwater landscapes. Their daily work embodies a profound relationship between human survival and natural cycles.
This project explores Haenyeo not as romanticized cultural symbols, but as working individuals whose lives are inseparable from the ocean’s pulse. It reflects on resilience, tradition, and the fragile continuity of a culture shaped by nature.
In November 2016, it was registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage under the name 'Jeju haenyeo culture'.
